What is Carbon Offsettting
Carbon Offsetting is a way of compensating for emissions produced with an equivalent carbon dioxide saving. Carbon Offsetting involves calculating your emissions and purchasing 'credits' from emission reduction projects that have prevented or removed an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
What can I offset?
All aspects of your life that involve energy. Some providers are able to offer you individual quotes for special events such as weddings, conferences or multiple destination family holidays.
How do I know how much carbon I need to offset?
Once you have completed your search and decided which provider will best meet your requirements you will be directed to their calculations page (should one be provided). This will then inform you how much you will need to pay to offset your emissions.
Why doesn't Our Carbon Nation make recommendations?
We feel that consumers have different objectives and motivations. Some may wish to see their investment spent on planting trees in their home country. Others may prefer to see it make a difference by investing in projects that offer an element of economic and social sustainability. We breakdown your choices into a small group of possibilities but we feel it is down to the individual to make that final choice.
If you are not making recommendations - How should I decide?
Our Carbon Nation has provided a platform for the offset providers themselves to address any issues you may have. The Our Carbon Nation Forum covers many topics that have been raised to date. Should you have any questions please register and post them on the forum. Should your question not be covered please contact us.
We are constantly riewing the information we provide. Going forward we are looking at providing greater detail on the provider profiles. Areas currently being discussed are greater transparency with administration costs and providing details on where the credits are obtained ie - do providers run their own projects or purchase credits and then sell them on.
We aim to continually update and increase the amount of information on the provider profiles to enable you to make an informed choice.
Can you guarantee that my donation will go to a project in a specific location?
Our Carbon Nation will supply a list of providers that match your requirements. Unless the provider states they offer project choice (see full profile) then it is up to the provider to decide which project they will put your donation towards.
How does Our Carbon Nation make it's money?
We are currently in discussion with a number of organisations who are interested in becoming sponsors.
