Bill amendment could force business GHG disclosure
22/04/2008

An article written by Kate Martin from Edie states that all companies may have to publicly disclose their greenhouse gas emissions under legislation passed by the House of Lords.

Making public disclosure compulsory should lead to companies becoming more aware of their carbon footprint, which in turn should increase the number of companies embarking on a robust carbon reduction strategy.

Carbon Reduction through Smarter Thinking
08/04/2008

Carbon Neutrality is currently high on the agenda of many corporations. For industries such as the corporate travel industry, issues such as sustainable and low carbon travel services are becoming hotly debated topics.

The success of any carbon reduction strategy depends entirely on the commitment of a corporation’s management and needs to be continuously enhanced by key decision makers. The fundamental message is to avoid and reduce emissions whenever possible.

Businesses in the UK could soon be forced to disclose GHG emissions if a new bill amendment is passed by MPs. Under the new legislation all companies would have to publicly disclose their greenhouse gas emissions. Making public disclosure compulsory will lead to a greater awareness, which in turn will increase the number of companies embarking on carbon reduction strategies.

Businesses that get a robust strategy in place now will be better prepared for a future, carbon-constrained economy. They will have the time to develop both the skills necessary for GHG management and a cost-effective strategy that suits their business, instead of simply reacting to future constraints.

Resolve to be greener in 2008
01/01/2008

Despite growing concern about climate change, when it comes to making New Year’s resolutions, Britons are more worried about losing weight than saving the planet. According to a YouGov poll, just 15 per cent of Britons have resolved to reduce their carbon footprint in 2008 compared to 38 per cent pledging to lose weight and 20 per cent aiming to make more money. If you want to work out your carbon footprint you can use the UK Act on Co2 calculator.

The retail carbon offset market is set to become less confusing.
17/09/2007

On 17 September 2007 Our Carbon Nation Ltd launches a global carbon offsetting directory service, http://www.ourcarbonnation.com

Over 33 of the world’s leading offset providers have contributed information to create a comprehensive offset comparison site.  The site presents information in a clear easy to read format.  A simple search results in a list of providers that meet selected criteria.  For those who wish to know more there are detailed profiles listing price, administration costs and project verification.  A forum also provides a platform for debating issues that surround the offset market.

Our Carbon Nation Ltd Director, Karen Faulkner said: “We are launching ourcarbonnation.com to allow consumers to compare the market quickly and easily.”  She went on to say: “The information we present will bring some transparency to the market, which we hope will lead to consumers gaining more confidence in the industry. We believe that on occasions where reductions at source are not possible, credible offsets do have a role to play in cutting carbon emissions and raising awareness of climate change.”

Parliamentary Committee conclude that offsetting should be encouraged.
23/07/2007

The House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee has published the results of its investigation into voluntary carbon offsets, concluding that they have a ‘useful role’ in reducing carbon emissions.  It recommends that encouragement and assistance should be given to individuals and organisations to offset their carbon emissions.

They recongnise that the the market is young and has areas that require improvement.  The Committee says it is unfortunate that offsets as a whole currently risk being tainted by a few failed projects.
